Healing happens at the speed of trust
We bounce backward and forwards from thriving to surviving. Like those silver-weighted balls that bounce back and forth on strings until something tells them to stop, we just keep going on in life in the best ways we can find. We have rhythms and waves of peaks and valleys and we pick up other people along our life journey to come on for the ride. We are given one mind, one body, this one moment in time, and many choices. We can’t always help what happens to us and it’s not our fault how our body responds to the happenings. In anthropology, we call this your POSITIONALITY. Your unique life and set of circumstances bring you to this very point. It’s an incredible power to have.
Our bodies and everybody around us hold their own distinct story. Its own pains, its own energetic vibrations, its own strengths, and its own weaknesses. What makes your leg dance in nervousness is another person's access to sleep. What researchers such as Bessel Van Der Kolk share are that our body keeps the score of everything that happens to us in this life. Your mind may not recall the traumatic life experiences you have faced, but your body does. Our nervous system is a massive system that affects our health, our feelings, and our thoughts. As an adaptable species designed for survival, we learn to move forward. How we move forward is created by the protective structures carved out by our families, our cultures, our DNA, and our resources. There came a point in my life, where my ability to move forward failed me, and understanding why was a far reach. I had never been known as one to collapse in a race.
What came from my experience of seeing several doctors, having multiple tests, and getting loads of expert opinions (that I’m incredibly grateful for) is that feeling safe in my body in a calm and loving way had more to do with me listening to my instinctual desires, trusting that I was OK, and that was incredibly hard for me. Our society is not designed for people to create life on their own terms. Nor does it allow us to take the time we need to heal.
I am living proof that conditions such as anxiety, panic disorders, depression, and both the long-term and short-term effects of trauma do not have a simple cause nor a simple solution. However, there is an ocean of options available to you if you're willing. Around the globe, there are solutions to leverage and offer your body, mind, and spirit. I only wish I could make it go faster. There is no need to let go of hope even though I understand it’s incredibly hard to find.
At a turning point in my life, I started homeschooling my three children so we could heal together through play. At the end of year one, we had families looking to learn and grow with us. Then I started looking for a community to somatically process my broken heart and trauma of a major medical condition. Somatic Days were the application of giving myself support for my cognitive therapy to be integrated into my life and give my body a rest from the trauma it had endured. These days were designed to bring people together affordably with facilitators from around the world who specialize in the research, treatment, and support of the Autonomic Nervous System and have a passion for spreading hope, joy, and living.
